The Job Profile

Simon & Schuster UK’s, Adult Editorial Fiction team is looking for a commercially savvy, creative and strategic Senior Commissioning Editor to build a list of successful reading group fiction within the commercial fiction list.

Reporting to the Publishing Director, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to build their own list at Simon & Schuster UK, bringing a wealth of new talent to the wider commercial fiction list. 

The Job Role

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding for the reading group genre and will have connections with authors, agents, communities, journalists and booksellers, and will be able to use those connections to enhance and help to establish and grow the reputation for S&S UK within this market.

The core responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to; to commission new titles in the reading group genre and manage backlist to ensure publishing lists meet identified market needs. To provide authors and agents with the highest standard of care. To project manage own titles to critical path and liaison with other departments at S&S to ensure smooth and effective management of publishing process. To be responsible for the budget and title profitability in the reading group space.

The Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have a knowledge of book club market and a proven track record of acquiring and publishing successfully into this space. They will have a network of established contacts with relevant agents, and a reputation for publishing successfully. They will be confident at presenting and persuading, practised in negotiation and able to shape a list to speak to market trends and reader desires and demands, be able to publish with an eye to future trends. They will be able to communicate effectively across all departments and will be a self-starter with a desire to publish the best fiction in this space.

You would have experience in editing book club fiction and be able to work quickly and decisively, taking decisions and putting them into action. You should be confident in managing your workload and be able demonstrate high-level editorial competency. You should have 5 years’ publishing experience in Editorial or Commissioning or Sales/Marketing/Publicity functions.
