My Job in 5: Laura Summers
1. Describe your role
I wear many hats. Primarily I drive the growth of BookMachine. That includes the community and the agency.
2. What do you like best about your role?
The people. I never stop meeting new people and this makes it the best job ever.
3. Which new projects or titles are you working on at the moment?
We are building a new immersive community, set to launch in January 2020. This will give access to those who can’t attend events and training due to distance or personal commitments a way to tap into the community online.
4. What skills do you need for your role?
Organisational skills, communication skills and focus.
5. What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry?
If you aren’t successful at any stage of an application, it isn’t personal, it’s just extremely competitive. There are so many well-read, articulate individuals hoping to score a publishing job – you need an extra edge to stand-out. Start a blog, take extra courses and go to events both to learn new things and meet people. Keep an open mind about roles you apply for too, getting started (even in an area you aren’t passionate about initially) is better than waiting on the sidelines.
