My Job in 5: Becca Harper-Day
1) Describe your role.
I create all the social posts and have recently expanded into general digital marketing at Unbound, making sure everyone knows about our crowdfunding and published titles.
2) What do you like best about your role?
I love taking photos of our books for Instagram - I feel great when I get the perfect shot, when the light hits the book just right and the framing does the cover design justice. I also love talking to our readers on social.
3) Which new projects or titles are you working on at the moment?
Right now I'm working on our April and May releases, which is almost 20 titles. Two that I'm really excited about are Stim, an autistic anthology edited by Lizzie Huxley-Jones, and The Scottish Boy, a sexy historical thriller by Alex De Campi. On the crowdfunding side, we have a gorgeous collection of folk tales currently funding - Lost & Found by Elizabeth Garner.
4) What skills do you need for your role?
The ability to see content potential in everything - even a pile of boxes can make a great photo that tells our followers what it's like to work in a busy publishing office! Marketing is really just telling a story - luckily I happen to be pretty good at spinning a yarn.
5) What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry?
It's pretty obvious but you have to love books! I'd never worked in publishing before Unbound, but my love of books meant that I was in a great place to talk to our readers - I just thought about the kind of stuff I like to see from publishers online. If you're a reader, you know what readers like you want, and you can expand out from there.
